Who is eligible to enroll in this program?
Children who have been baptized in the Catholic Church, have reached the age of reason (around seven years old), are at least in second grade and have participated in Religious Education for a minimum of two years. Older children who are in need of receiving the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion may also enroll. The families of those enrolled should be registered members of St. Augustine Church.
Is there a fee for this program?
No. Access to the sacraments is a fundamental right of every Catholic.
Does my child need anything for this program?
Yes. Your child will need access to a Catholic Bible as well as supplies to make a Memory Book. The list of items needed to complete the Memory Book will be given out at the first meeting.
What is needed to register my child for this program?
A completed registration form by the 30th of September
The registration form can be filled out online or a paper copy may be picked up at the front desk
A copy of the child’s Baptism Certificate
When does this program take place?
The classes for this program are held Monday nights from 6:30pm-8:00pm. Click here to view the schedule.
Who is expected to attend the program classes?
We ask that at least one parent attend each class with their child for two reasons. One is that the parents are the primary catechist and so it is important that they have a thorough understanding of what their child is learning in preparation for the sacraments so that they can continue to teach them at home. The second reason is that faith formation is a life-long process and your presence at the classes is a beautiful witness to your child.
What am I committing to?
Attending Sunday Mass every week
Attending all the Sacramental Preparation classes
Attending the First Reconciliation Retreat & First Communion Retreat
Registering and attending Sunday Religious Education classes (add link to that page)
Praying with my child through the Sunday Gospel readings at home
Helping your child to complete their Memory Book and any other assignments during off weeks
Who are the teachers in our program?
The catechists (religion teachers) for the children are volunteers who willingly give of their time and energy. Being a Student Center we are blessed to have many University and College student volunteers. All of our catechists meet regularly with the Sacramental Prep Coordinator and go through catechist training.
Who do I contact if I have questions or concerns?
Please contact the Sacramental Prep Coordinator, Elena Melendez, if you have any questions or concerns. Elena can be reached at (352) 372-3533 ext 141, or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
