Elena was born in New York and lived there until her move to Puerto Rico in her teen years. She completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Science with a major in Medical Technology and a minor in Chemistry in 1991 from the Inter American University in San German, PR. She’s worked as a Medical Technologist in clinical labs in Puerto Rico and Boston, in addition to 9 years in Diagnostic sales. She moved to Gainesville in 2004 to work in the VA Medical Center’s clinical lab and became an active member of St. Augustine in 2010. Elena has participated in many of the Hispanic ministries, such as the Charismatic Prayer group, Cursillo, Catechism, Liturgical Ministers, Liturgical Lectors and was also the Chair for the Hispanic Advisory Council for 4 years (2012-2016) before accepting her new role as Coordinator of Religious Ed in August 2016. Elena is also living her vocation as a Temporary Promised Lay Dominican of the Order of Preachers and is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Theology from the Franciscan University of Steubenville. During her free time she is an active entrepreneur of two businesses, where she develops and mentors leaders and loves to spend time with her two adult children and her granddaughter.
