Sacramental Preparation for adults requires both attendance at the sessions and a discipline of personal study. This is for a few reasons.
First, RCIA sessions fit what is commonly called the "flipped classroom." That is, students take in the basic information for catechesis through personal study prior to the session, and then we have discussions during the session to lead us into a deeper understanding, application, and appreciation of what was learned.
Another way to see it is by reference to the traditional list of seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, and in particular, Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom. In the personal studies, the candidate opens primarily to the gift of Knowledge of the things of God, whereas in the sessions, we primarily open to the gift of Understanding. In turn, as we deepen in the life of prayer and service, we grow in the gift of Wisdom.
To complete Personal Studies, please see the pages in the site menu (probably visible on the left, depending on your browser) and e-mail responses to vincent@catholicgators.org. Also, please e-mail if you have any questions.
There are 20 Personal Studies total, to be spread out over a few months to a year, depending on the time the candidate is taking to prepare for reception of the sacraments. (Growing in Holiness, Saints and Saint Names, and The Hour That Will Change Your Life are bonus material.)
In order to complete the personal studies, you'll need to sign up for access to FORMED.org, a digital platform with lots of great Catholic formation programs, documentaries, movies, books, and talks. You can sign up for free and get full access to all programming by registering on FORMED as a member of the parish.
